Microadventure: Cycling to Sleep on a Hill
In our busy lives, finding time for grand adventures can be challenging. This is where microadventures come into play, offering the thrill and refreshment of an adventure without the need for extensive time off, or elaborate planning or costs. Inspired by Alastair Humphreys' concept of the 5 to 9 microadventure, a simple yet exhilarating experience awaits: cycling to sleep on a hill.
I loved it so much that I made a short video about my little overnight adventure. You can watch my other cycling adventures of the King Alfred Way and Tour de Jersey on my YouTube channel.
A microadventure is about seizing the hours outside of the 9 to 5 grind. From 5 PM to 9 AM, there’s a window of opportunity for exploration and discovery. It's about breaking the routine, embracing the outdoors, and reconnecting with nature, all without taking time off work.
How to do it?
Planning Your Cycling Adventure
Choose Your Hill: Find a hill within cycling distance from your home or workplace. It should be accessible yet offer a sense of remoteness. Apps like Strava or Google Maps can help identify nearby hills and cycling routes.
Pack Light, Pack Right: Minimalism is key. A small backpack should contain a sleeping bag, a bivvy bag or lightweight tent, a headlamp, water, some snacks, and warm clothing. Don't forget a small first aid kit and a portable charger for your phone.
Safety First: Inform someone about your plan and estimated return time. Ensure your bike is in good condition, and carry a basic repair kit.
Ideally be near a pub or restaurant so you can grab dinner and a pint at the end of your ride.
Embarking on the Journey
After finishing work, gear up and hit the road. The transition from the humdrum of daily life to the anticipation of adventure is invigorating. Pedaling through the changing scenery, you’ll feel a sense of freedom. As you climb towards your chosen hill, the urban noise fades, replaced by the symphony of nature.
Embracing the Experience
Upon reaching your destination, find a suitable spot to set up camp. As the sun sets, enjoy the serenity and the panoramic views. The simplicity of a meal shared with nature is profoundly satisfying. Whether it's a sandwich or a thermos of hot soup, food tastes better outdoors.
As night falls, settle into your sleeping bag and gaze at the stars. The absence of city lights offers a stunning celestial display, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the world. The cool night air and the rustling of leaves create a soothing lullaby, making sleep come easily.
The Morning After
Waking up to the sunrise on a hilltop is a magical experience. The world comes alive with the first light of dawn, and there's a sense of accomplishment in knowing you’ve embraced the wild and stepped out of your comfort zone.
After a simple breakfast, pack up and cycle back home, feeling refreshed and recharged. The return journey might be a bit challenging, but the memories of the night and the sense of adventure will keep you going.
Why I love it
Cycling to sleep on a hill is a microadventure that encapsulates the essence of Alastair Humphreys' philosophy. It’s about making the most of the time you have, seeking simplicity, and finding joy in the natural world. It doesn’t require extensive planning or significant expense, just the willingness to step out and embrace the adventure. So, next time you feel the call of the wild, hop on your bike and head for the hills. The world is waiting.
