My New Helmet: The POC Ventral Air MIPS in Orange

Buying a new helmet is an exciting day for any rider. It's been about 5 years since I upgraded so it was long overdue. I'd seen the range from POC on my Instagram feed from other rides and just loved the way the looked, coupled that with the top-notch quality they are renowned for made it a simple decision.

As a cycling enthusiast, safety is always a top priority, and a good helmet is essential for that. I recently upgraded to the POC Ventral Air MIPS, and I couldn’t be happier with the choice—especially in my bold color selection of Mammoth orange. In this post, I’ll dive into the features that make this helmet stand out, and why I think it’s a must-have for serious riders.

Safety First: MIPS Technology

One of the most important reasons I chose the POC Ventral Air MIPS is its advanced safety features. The helmet is equipped with MIPS technology (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System), which is designed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during an impact. When you're riding trails at high speed or tackling tricky terrain, the risk of a crash is always there. MIPS helps add an extra layer of protection by allowing the helmet to move slightly in relation to the head upon impact, which can significantly reduce the strain on your brain.

One thing to mention is that all helmets have to pass a baseline level of safety. Regardless of the cost, a reputable brand will be protecting you even without a hefty price tag.

This POC helmet cost me £170, which is way more than I have paid for a helmet in the past. However as I hope to have it for 4-5 years and use it often, I could justify the cost. Plus it looked cool!

Ventilation That Keeps You Cool

Another standout feature of the helmet is its superior ventilation system. With carefully designed air channels, the helmet maximizes airflow and keeps your head cool, even on long, challenging rides. As I will be riding in Cyprus for next few years I wanted a helmet which would help me in the heat. This helmet solves that problem. The vents are strategically placed to channel air over and around your head, making it one of the best ventilated helmets I've ever worn.

The airy design doesn’t compromise on safety or aerodynamics either. This helmet strikes a perfect balance between keeping you cool and ensuring you're protected.

Lightweight and Comfortable Design

Comfort is another key aspect I look for in a helmet, and the Ventral Air MIPS delivers on that front as well. It's impressively lightweight, so even after hours of riding, it doesn’t feel heavy or uncomfortable on my head. The fit is snug without being restrictive, thanks to the adjustable size system, which allows you to tweak it for a perfect fit.

Whether you're cruising along smooth trails or hitting rough, technical sections, the helmet stays in place and doesn’t shift around. Plus, the inner padding is moisture-wicking and easy to remove for washing, ensuring your helmet stays fresh and comfortable ride after ride.

Why I Chose Orange

Let’s talk about the color—orange! It’s not just about safety, but also about style. I wanted a helmet that would stand out on the trails, and the bold orange color does exactly that. It’s bright, fun, and highly visible, which is an added bonus when it comes to safety. If you're riding with friends or in a crowded area, a brightly colored helmet makes you easier to spot. Plus it helps it matches the bright Mammoth branding!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m incredibly happy with my new POC helmet. The combination of MIPS technology, excellent ventilation, and lightweight comfort makes it an ideal choice for both everyday trail riding and more intense mountain biking sessions. The bold orange color adds a personal touch that I love, and it's become one of my favorite pieces of gear.

If you’re in the market for a new helmet, I highly recommend giving this one a try. It’s not just about looking good (though it definitely does that), but about making sure you’re safe and comfortable while out on the trails. You can never go wrong investing in quality safety gear, and the POC Ventral Air MIPS delivers on every front!
