Tour de Jersey

The Opportunity

I'll be honest, I hadn't set out or planned to ride the circumference of Jersey, but there was a small window of opportunity shortly after the idea popped into my head.

I was on a family holiday on the Channel Island, which is situated way off the south coast of England, pretty much next to France.

We had taken our bikes in the hope we could do a short ride whilst we were there, but that was all that was known when we loaded them onto the car. When I had a spare morning I checked out the options on Komoot, and realised a navigation of its coast was possible in this short window.

The Route

I started on the northeast corner in a lovely village called Trinity and anti-clockwise with the plan to stop in the capital St. Hellier after about 40km of riding. Along the way I tried to include a few of the many forts and castles which scatter the Jersey land.

Knowing how busy some of the popular tourist roads can get I tried to avoid them as much as possible and even took a few gravel paths as well.

One thing that makes Jersey a great place to cycle, is the amount of climbing available. Unfortunately you don't get to enjoy the downhill as much because they often in residential areas, with the exception of a beautiful downhill section heading to the coast on the west of the island. The video at the top of this page is from the top of that point and it was absolutely superb.

How did it all go?

In a nutshell - absolutely amazing!
Now I am aware that on the day I had the best conditions possible, no wind and clear blue skies. I also got to do this ride on a Sunday, and outside of their peak season, so the roads were probably
uncharacteristically quiet. But I was absolutely blown away with how good the riding was. My only regret was that I tried to get the ride done in such a short time so didn't get to truly enjoy everything along the way.

First up are the views. You never have to wait long and you are treated to some epic rugged coastline shots, some crystal clear blue seas out to the distance, or even the rare glimpse of France in the distance. My two favourite parts were the north and south west of the island.

Secondly are the numerous historic monuments to explore scattered around the island. Countless forts left over from when Jersey was under Germany Occupation, three impressive castles who original aim to help defend the island, along with the War Tunnels. I got to scratch the surface on some of these during my time and again wish I had longer.

Finally the food and drink. Thanks to its Anglo-French influence Jersey has a delicious combination available to its visitors. I was never too far away from a traditional pub or artisan cafe. Another regret of having less time was being able to stop at so many of these places.

The road quality was good, the climbs were long enough to get stuck in but not too long that you suffered. There were two epic downhill points on the west of the island with amazing views. Even through the "busy" areas the traffic was patient and I never felt I was getting in the way of things.

You'll notice from the map at the top I didn't really explore the centre of the island, but there would be so many more routes on offer you could happily make a few more days riding.

Final Thoughts

This ride was absolutely beautiful. I think doing it out of season and on a Sunday made the whole thing even better. The roads were empty, the quality amazing, views immense, and you were never too far from a cafe or a pub.

I wish I had the whole day to do it, spending a little longer at the forts and incorporating a few pitstops along the way.

In my view Jersey is such a good place to pick if you want to do 3-4 days of riding, whether it be road riding or bike touring.

If you are over on the island and couldn't bring your bike, Lakeys offer a range of bike styles depending on your riding.

Full breakdown of stats are available on Strava:

Average Speed = 20.4 km/h
